Product DescriptionIn A History of Thailand, Chris Baker and Pasuk Phongpaichit show how a world of noble Mandarin and unfree labor in a rural society of small farmers and peasants developed an urban society populated mainly by migrants from southern China. They trace how a Buddhist cosmography adapted to the new ideas of space and time, and a traditional political system was transformed into a new nation-state under a strengthened monarchy. The authors cover the competition between urban nationalists. . . More>>

As another mentioned previously, the early years, before the Chakri dynasty are very poorly covered. The Chakri Dynasty to cover the period of Rama the sixth is not so bad, but a little vague and not enough depth on the Kings’ rule. Much has been also lost credibility when the great fakir and fraud Leon Anna Owen 1871 `s output has been written as fact. It made me wonder how much research has been done or has been the most material of mouth. A major event was the incident and its consequences and Paknam sparse vegetation. The years of Rama the seventh and place of Pridi Phibun and were well made, but that is where the book begins to degenerate very abruptly. There is strong today `s participation in Pridi assassinate him in 1946 by a king, but it is a mystery finely covered. Only later in the Ramah Chapter 9 is the real authors “begin seep through, still further in the text. The authors (a very liberal teacher in Chula BTW) waxingly commemorate the early communist movement in Thailand in the 1930s Pridi painting almost as a saint (Paris-educated founding father in the early communist), while his opponent several times compared to Hitler and Mussolini. Later, the arch Nemisis unapolegetically Thais, Americans of the 1950s. Chapter 7 until the Americans again and again the bloody, the root of Thailand `s current problems. They also apply to Aludea whether Thais have the direction of Thailand Thammasat students CPT would be much better to follow today. . . (Art, like other major SE Asian Marxist economic success: Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Burma). Well, at least one member of the Communist Party of Thailand are the heroes, while the present king is portrayed as an innocent awkward but happy puppet how the winds blew and 1973. At that time, he showed backbone by the authors, but then returned to her flower gardens of Hua Hin. The overall objective of fighting against the monarchy and the anti-Yank prejudices grew tedious after a while and it was really hard to weed in the last 100 pages of the book. If you really want a real version of Thai history, I recommend the book Wyatt. It is much longer and probably a little more academic, but it’s not a primer on student interests SE Asian socialism. Both authors seem very experienced and articulate, it is sad they could not keep their leftist ideology of a nation `s very complex history, much more complex than simply” left “or” right ist.Rating ” Analogies: 5.2
If you are looking for an accurate and readable historical introduction to Thai history, what it is. Look no further! This is a great improvement over Tome Wyatt, who read more than “the book” an introduction, but it is really under-par in his representation of historical reality. These authors (finally!) Do a good job of explaining the extent of the length of the book, like a table were feudal city-states eventually consolidated, and basically powers colonized Bangkok, in the end-state nation of Thailand. A good companion book: “Siam Mapped” by Thongchai Winichakul. Finally someone has the right! Rating: 5.4
After the visit to Thailand a few times that I knew some of the basic story. This book helps to fill gaps in my knowledge and tells the history of Thailand since the pre-nation. Emphasis is placed on the 20th Century and to some extent the mid to late 19th. This is logical because there is no “Thailand” was before that date or at least from the capital Bangkok. He spent some time with the small kingdoms that were part of what would later Siam and Thailand, and how the monarchy has changed over time. But the book deals with everything, how the nation has come and how they entwickelt.Der style is perfectly readable and very well studied and documented. It is obvious that a book like this depends on a relatively small audience. It was a good companion for travel gewesen.Es me, it’s fascinating to see how the story repeated in Thailand to this day. This collection is a nice, an overview survey of past and present in Thailand. For those who is a better understanding of the diverse Asian nation, is a good book to start. A great beach for tourists think lesen.Troy Parfitt, author Rating: 5.4
This book is primarily a story of the current line of Kings (1800) until today. So if you want to know as modern Thailand formed, it is an excellent source. If you are looking for information earlier, it is very uneven. Rating: 5.3
